INTRODUCTION:
HealthGene Laboratory is proud to offer a new coat and nose color test in a vast number of dog breeds. Now, by DNA testing, we can successfully predict the future coat as well as nose colors of puppies. This information can be crucial to satisfy breed standards for dog registration. Using DNA testing to determine the hidden colours of the dam and sire can assist you in choosing the best partners for your breeding stock.
NEW article: MAKING SENSE OF COAT COLOR: A GENETIC APPROACH
NEW GENE:
HOMOZYGOUS BLACK:
In most breeds, the gene that is necessary for black or brown or blue coat color is K, and the allele responsible is KB.
The other two alleles kbr and ky are recessive to KB. Occasionally a Weimaraner is born with pale tan points or a Labrador Retriever with brindle points.
Such pups are carrying kbr and ky instead of being KB/KB . In order to determine which littermates are not carrying one of these alleles
which are undesirable in such breeds, they can be tested to be sure they are KB/KB .
In a few herding breeds, but not all, black is inherited in a recessive pattern. Such dogs are a/a at the agouti locus.
See specific breed sheets for this test.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION:
The alleles at the K, A, and E locus were identified by a collaborative
research project between the labs of Dr. Greg Barsh at Stanford University and the Dr. Sheila Schmutz at the University of Saskatchewan who continues to
work with HealthGene Laboratory in the implementation of these and other coat color tests for dogs.
Many dog owners helped by contributing either individual samples or samples from complete litters.
