DNA TEST

Italian Grehounds occur in several colors: black, brown, fawn, and rarely clear red . Several genes and the interaction thereof contribute to these colors.
Dilute variations of these colors also occur in IG. The gene causing this is Melanophilin, known as the D locus. However, a DNA test for the d alleles in this breed is not yet available. The table below will therefore only mention the dark colors.
One gene that is necessary for a black or brown coat color is K, and the allele responsible is K^B. Italian Greyhounds that are fawn do not have a K^B, but are k^y/k^y. Because all Italian Greyhounds are a^y/ay at the A locus, the K locus determines the difference between black and fawn in this breed.
Seal is a color in IG that is not pitch black but all dogs of this color tested have at least one K^B allele. Therefore they are not distinguishable from black at this time. Clear red appears to be rare in IG but such dogs could be any genotype at the K locus since they are e/e and this masks the effects of K. Italian Greyhound can have a melanistic mask too. It is not visible on black or brown Italian Greyhound, and is typically quite small on fawn Italian Greyhound. Italian Greyhound can be brown although this color is not common. Fawn Italian Greyhound that are b/b will have a brown nose and pads. If they have a mask, it too will be brown.
In some countries white spotting is allowed, and in others it is not. A DNA test for white spotting is available for $65.00 However, in this breed It appears that most heterozygous S/s^p dogs have white legs and undersides so it may not be necessary to test solid dogs to determine which are S/S and which are S/s^p. Italian Greyhound that are s^p/s^p have some to much white on their torso.
